What tools should you carry on your bike?
What tools do I need to work on my bicycle?
Minimal kit:
Spare tube, tyre levers, multi-tool, pump.
This gives you a minimal tool kit but there are other things you can take if you don’t mind the weight penalty (tools you select may come in useful but you have to carry them all up every hill).
More comprehensive kit:
2 spare tubes , tyre lever set and tyre patches. Co2 inflator and mini pump. Multi tool with chain breaker tool, chain joining link, zip ties, spare cables if needed , phone and money.
Should I carry a chain tool?
Modern bike chains are quite narrow but rarely break due to their high strength and durability. However, just for piece of mind you might want to carry a chain tool. Many modern multi tools have a chain tool built in so this solves the problem without adding much weight or bulk. It’s also a good idea to include the correct size split link for your chain in your tool kit.
What does a bike chain tool do?
What do road cyclists carry?
In many cases road cyclists carry as little as possible due to weight obsession. I know people that leave all tools behind when riding in a group to save carrying extra weight and instead rely on their riding buddy’s to help them out. Don’t be that guy and never do it when riding solo.
At least carry spare tube, tyre levers, multi-tool, pump, phone and cash.
What tools should I carry on my mountain bike?
Most mountain bikers are (slightly) less obsessed with weight and are often riding in more remote areas so often carry more comprehensive kit. This can include 2 spare tubes , tyre sealant, tyre lever set and tyre patches. Co2 inflator and mini pump. Multi tool with chain breaker tool, chain joining link, zip ties, spare cables if needed , phone and money.
Where should I put my bike jacket?
Taking a light rain jacket or a gilet with you is an excellent idea. They are great if the weather is changeable but are also good to put on for long descents or whilst doing some roadside repairs. An old school cycling trick is to roll your jacket around your mini pump and carry it in your middle back jersey pocket.
What should I put in my cycling jersey?
What are the pockets on the back of cycling jerseys for?
Are cycling jerseys supposed to be tight?
Yes, the tighter they are the less aerodynamic drag you will have. However comfort is a factor too and no one wants to look like an over stuffed sausage so find a happy medium.
How do you carry something on a bike?
There are several frame bag options for carrying your tools, phone beer etc. They range from minimalist to huge depending on how much you need to carry versus how much weight and aerodynamics you want to sacrifice.
Saddle bag: this is the standard for minimal size and more aero placement. Whilst they used to be fairly ugly and bulky, there are now some sleek options available.
Handlebar bag: more of a mountain bike / bikepacking option but hold a lot more than most saddle bags.
Frame bag: Bigger than a handlebar bag (some are the length of the top tube) frame bags hold lots of kit for day long adventures.
Bottle cage held bag: if you only need one of your bottle cages for a bidon (most bikes have 2 bottle cage mounts)then a zip up tool kit that is the size of a bottle can be a great alternative to a bag.
How can I carry my phone while cycling?
You can add a phone mount to your bike handlebars and use your phone as a cycle computer or gps. Many choose to carry their phone when cycling for safety and tracking on solo rides. It can be a worry looking after your phone as the prices for smart phones are astronomical and they are fragile if dropped or in the event of a bike crash.
Where do road cyclists put their phone?
Jersey pocket is the most common but can be a risky option as phones can be quite slippery against some jersey materials. A zip pocket is best or failing that a saddle bag.
Can you cycle with a backpack on?
Yes and there are several great options by company’s like Rapha and Evoc that are designed for cycling. They have plenty of room for day long adventures or commuting and another advantage is they can hold a hydro-pack style water bottle. The disadvantages are that they can feel a little bulky , add weight and can feel a little warm depending on the temperature you are riding in.
