Road cycling climbing advice for beginners.

We have all seen people that are natural climbers. Light weight with massive quads and the heart of an oxen, flying past us in the hills like we are standing still. Weather you find them inspiring or just plain annoying the good news is you can get much better than your current level. Here are the things you need to work on to help you improve in the near term.

How Do i make cycling easier to climb?

Climb more: This one is obvious and longer term but pays over time. Choose to add more hills in your routes or do some hill repeat sessions if you dont have lots of climbs to choose from in your area.

How should a beginner ride a bike uphill?

Pacing: On short climbs its ok to go at them with maximum effort and simply power your way through but on longer efforts this will see you pushing your bike by the half way point. instead start slower than you usually would and let the effort find you. You can slowly ramp up the speed as you get further in to the climb if you are feeling ok but there is nothing worse than going in too hard and suffering slowly up most of the hill.

How do I get better at cycling uphill?

At first when you are new to cycling the more you ride (more often and also how far) the better you will get across the board. Better endurance, speed and better climbing, the gains will come thick and fast.

Once you are a little more experienced you will need to add in some dedicated climbing practice. Head to your favourite local climb (the closer to home the better) and do several reps of ‘hill repeats’. Simply ride up the climb and then do it again…and again.

Why is cycling up hill so hard?

Strength to weight ratio: Your amount of mass (you plus the bike) and its relation ship with your power output will determine how fast you can travel up hill. If you reduce your body weight or bike weight you will go faster. It can be very expensive to reduce bike weight (usually by selecting super cool but over priced components) so its far cheaper to reduce body weight. The other half of the strength to weight ratio is your power output so building strength in your legs and cardiovascular fitness will help there. If you are cycling more as time passes you should steadily improve both body weight and power generation.

How can i bike uphill without getting tired?

Power meter: Once the domain of professional cyclists or the super rich, power meters are now quite a common sight for cyclists. Power meters measure your pedalling power in watts. Knowing how many watts you can hold for a given time is very useful in pacing climbs and not using all your energy to early. If you dont mind spending the money and like data that can be a useful edition to your climbing arsenal and a great training tool.

Should you stand up when cycling uphill?

Change position on long climbs: Although seated position is more energy efficient it can be beneficial to stand for periods during long climbs to stop aches and pains. Changing hand position can help also.

Does Cycling uphill build muscle?

Yes and no. If you are new to cycling you will gain some muscle and also change your body composition. Cycling is however an endurance based exercise so don’t expect legs like Arnold Schwarzenegger from cycling.

What gear should you be in going uphill on a bike?

Gearing and cadence: Selecting an easy gear that you can spin faster rather than grinding up hills will pay dividends. Turning the pedals slowly using more strength and can quickly build up fatigue metabolites in the muscles leaving your legs feeling pumped up and like useless lumps of lead. Instead select an gear that you can turn at a higher cadence (more RPM) giving you muscles more opportunity to flush out the lower amounts of lactic acid so any build up occurs more slowly. If you live in a particularly mountainous region you may need to change to a cassette with a larger easy gear to be able to do I this.

What to eat while cycling long distances?

Fuelling: Running out of energy (often called bonking) is an awful experience. Your muscles run on sugar and if you deplete your reserves without replenishing them you are going nowhere fast. You basically feel like getting off the bike and laying on the ground crying. If you do it half way up a 10k climb its going to be a lousy afternoon. Make sure you eat or drink little and often on longer rides (over 1.5 hours) and ideally before you hit and long hills.

Is cycling uphill good for you?

Although it is painful if you are doing it right, riding uphill is very good for you. Long climbs and amazing for your cardiovascular fitness.

How do you cycle up hills faster?

Psychological tricks: The human body has evolved over countless generations to have some in built safety limits with regard to not killing your self whilst cycling (well probably originally for endurance hunting). These can be thought of like a rev limiter on a car, they stop you from going to far and causing damage or from fully depleting your energy stores. The problem is that they are set at quite a low level (people quit at 40% is the estimate of some). This limit can be recalibrated with time and effort but can also be “gamed” slightly with some psychological tricks. Here are a few things you can try with immediate results. 1 Hold a wheel: if riding in a group just try holding the wheel of the person in front of you whilst climbing and dont worry about anything other than not allowing the gap to increase (note this will not work with Lance Armstrongs wheel) 2 Break the climb up in your head: on longer climbs break it up in to manageable pieces ie pick a point and maintain pace until you get to it and then pick another(works well with lampposts etc) 3 Concentrate on something else: like breathing for example, just maintain a steady pace and keep your breathing steady and count your breaths (this is a meditative technique to take your mind off the suffering). 4 Self talk: take control of the voice in your head and say positive things instead of negative things (so say “I can do this” rather than “this hurts like hell and I cant go on”)

Summary

If you stay consistent with your training as you continue on your cycling journey you will make gains you originally never thought possible. Effort and good habits over time will pay dividends but by implementing a few of these basics you can be faster right away. Stay safe and enjoy the mountains.
